Civic Engagement

From it’s inception over 100 years ago, it has been the talent and tenacity of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People “NAACP” members that has saved lives and changed many negative aspects of American society.

Founded February 12, 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest, largest and most widely recognized grassroots–based civil rights organization. It’s more than half-million members and supporters throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

The Greater Gettysburg Area NAACP Unit 2384 received its charter October of 2004 under the direction of Kathy Williams with the assistance of local community leaders such as Rose Bolton, Sheila Supenski and Sectional Director Dwayne Jackson.

Since holding its first meeting in September 2003, the local branch has maintained a valuable presence in the community. Through the provisions of their Annual Freedom Fund Banquet, they have encouraged local corporations to sponsor scholarship funds for local high school seniors seeking post-secondary education.  In addition, they’ve assisted in the mobilization of the community against KKK Marches, worked with the area prison systems to assist in mediation of rights, hosted Prayer Breakfasts, provided Food Baskets for those in need, and more.

Racism, Civic and Social Justice/Equality are matters that impact the entire community. This is why the Greater Gettysburg Area NAACP Unit 2384, invites those interested in supporting the works of the organization, to join.  Annual Memberships – $30.00 for Adults and Youth as low as $10.  http://action.naacp.org/page/-/FieldResources/membership_app.pdf
